#Long-Range Planning
Shoreline Buffers
Hello Planning Commission,
I am writing to urge you to maintain adequate buffers in the upcoming shoreline master
plan update. As you know, puget Sound is in serious trouble and we must do all we can to
turn back the human impacts that have led to this this dire situation. It is your
responsibility to maintain the toughest possible standards to save Puget Sound.
Shoreline buffers are a vital part of saving Puget Sound. These buffers are sized to
reduce erosion and flooding that can threaten homes. The buffers will prevent chemicals
from poisoning shellfish beds, keep our beaches clean and our salmon streams cool, and
protect forage fish spawning areas. If we want to save puget Sound, it is important that
we protect shoreline vegetation, beaches, and bluffs.
I urge you to maintain strong shoreline buffers and a strong Shoreline Master Plan that
takes saving puget Sound seriously. With all the threats facing puget Sound--climate
change and ocean acidification, toxic chemicals poisoning our salmon, stream degredation
and urban run-off--we must act now, before it is too late.
Thank you for your service.
Sincerely,
Chrissy McLean
