Subject: Shorline Master Plan
Dear Commissionersr
I understand that Jefferson County is currently updating it's shoreline master plan. The preliminary
draft permits mining activities including conveyor belts, piers and barges on the conservancy
shoreline of Hood Canal. As you know the entire Hood Canal shoreline is designated as a "Shoreline
of State-Wide Significance."
As a waterfront property owner and tax payer in Jefferson Countyr I would like it known that I am
adamantly opposed to allowing such mining activities in Jefferson County. Hood Canal remains one
of the most pristine bodies of salt water in the world. To allow such industrialization to take place
on it's shores would be a tragedy indeed. Look at what the Puget Sound has become over decades
of neglect and an "anything goes for the sake of profit and convenience" mentality. We all have
a duty and responsibility to protect Hood Canal from those who seek profit over the welfare of the
environment. I have enjoyed what the Canal offers for over forty years. I cannot, in my wildest
dreams, imagine how we as caretakers of this beautiful waterway could ever allow or even consider
allowing such activities to take place on the shores of Hood Canal.
The tax payers and voters of Jefferson County have given you the awesome responsibility of "gate
keepers" concerning the future of Hood Canal. You have the opportunity to step up and
demonstrate the courage necessary to make hard choices. To stand in the face of economic and
business pressures in order to do what is right for the environment and the beauty and health of
Hood Canal. I would ask that you amend the preliminary draft of the Shoreline Master Plan by
prohibiting any such mining activities as currently outlined in the SMP.
Respectfully,
Rob Forbes
Jefferson County tax payer and property owner
