Specifically, I find it indeed unfortunate that this draft permits mining activities on the conservancy shoreline of Hood Canal. I cannot imagine a more intrusive use of the canal, which remains a pristine waterway, virtually free of industrialization of any kind. Allowing the conveyers, piers and barge facilities associated with mining and similar intensive land uses is both environmentally irresponsible and a potential safety hazard. Instead, we should be doing everything we can to preserve the area's beauty and natural characteristics. This is truer today than at any time, given the increasing scarcity of areas like Hood Canal. With so much of Puget Sound struggling with significant environmental challenges, we are indeed fortunate to be in a position to protect what is certainly one of the sound's most unspoiled areas. In choosing to enforce this protection, we are ensuring the public good rather than catering to private interests. If we act otherwise, we will have to answer to our children's children about why we were the poor stewards who allowed the destruction of this precious gift of nature. I urge the Jefferson County Planning Commission to amend the current preliminary draft Shoreline Master Plan to prohibit mining activities on the shoreline of Hood Canal and any other shoreline of state-wide significance within the county's jurisdiction. Thank you for taking note of my comments. -- KH Anderson 1/29/2009
