I understand and respect the need to balance environmental concerns with peoples' need to make a living, but given all that recent history shows of damage done to public resources by commercial pressure and heedless development, there's no defensible reason to permit uses that add stress to our fragile Puget Sound and Hood Canal. I realize and regret that you often face intimidating opposition in doing your job. I've read in the Leader and heard from you persorially the threats by Fred Hill Materials representatives and others who want to intimidate you into doing what they want. I can imagine it must be difficult to carry out one's elected responsibilities in this atmosphere. However, we elected you with a loud mandate to preserve natural resources generally and, specifically, to deny a gravel-mining operation on Hood Canal. Hood Canal is a county, state and national treasure. It should not be industrialized for the benefit of a few and to the detriment of the community at large. Please stand strong in carrying out the emphatic, demonstrated desire of your voters to preserve and protect public waters and especially Hood Canal and Puget Sound. Yours truly, Susan Marett 92 N Rhododendron Dr Port Townsend, WA 98368 1
