As a privately-funded venture through Greenfleet Monitoring Expeditions utilizing volunteers, this has brought me into contact with hundreds of citizens now working or playing on Hood Canal. Without an exception, these citizens agree that healthy estuaries are required to maintain healthy fisheries and financially-viable aquaculture. Of particular concern is the future of the oyster, geoduck, crab, and salmon industries. Of course, many of these citizens are concerned over the loss of recreational fishing, shellfish, and birding activities. The Shoreline Management Plan, as written, has taken a giant step toward preserving healthy estuaries. Until further scientific data requires expanding some protections, it should be stressed that many of the protections in the draft SMP are minimal. Of primary concern are buffers involving homes and forestry, water-to-shore views, monitoring of marinas for environmental impact, and the prevention of any mining activities. Although there are some important environmental issues not addressed in the draft SMP, I find it acceptable. Please send it forward without reduction of its current protections.
