Apparently the preliminary draft permits mining activities, including conveyor belts, piers, and barges on the conservancy shoreline of Hood Canal. The entire Hood Canal shoreline, however, is designated as a "Shoreline of State-Wide Significance." We should be smarter and wiser than to allow commercial activity as intensive as mining activities, including conveyor belts, piers, and barges on the conservancy shoreline of Hood Canal. Witness the massive expense required to clean up the rest of Puget Sound. Hood Canal remains a pristine waterway, virtually void of commercial shipping of any kind. It's shoreline is not yet marred by industrialization. We should not allow private interests to destroy this gift of nature. I urge the Jefferson County Planning Commission to amend the current preliminary draft shoreline master plan to prohibit mining activities on the shoreline of Hood Canal and any other shoreline of state-wide significance within the county's jurisdiction. Thank you, Ron Copstead Kitsap County 2/2/2009
