Thank You! ...for supporting Jefferson Land Trust in 2024! <https://saveland.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=936e78a4a9&e=f9473ad85e> Dear Greg, This year marked a special anniversary: 35 years of community-powered conservation! With your help, we’ve protected almost 18,500 acres of wildlife habitat, farmland, and forests in Jefferson County since our founding in 1989. This conservation legacy continues to grow as we move forward on some of our most exciting endeavors yet. We began 2024 by celebrating the Land Trust’s biggest land acquisition to date: 853-acre Chimacum Ridge Forest. We’re now working with a multitude of volunteers to establish a community forest for all on the site. We continue to work with willing landowners to protect key properties in the Quimper Wildlife Corridor. In early 2024, we facilitated the transfer of 107 acres of corridor forestland to Jefferson County for permanent protection, bringing the total protected area in the corridor to 291 acres. I’m particularly proud of the Land Trust’s free youth education programs, which engage hundreds of public school students on our nature preserves each year. This past fall, we hired our first full-time Education Coordinator to run and expand these highly valued learning programs. The generosity of our donors, volunteers, and many project partners makes all of this progress possible — thank you! With gratitude, <https://mcusercontent.com/25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21/images/526df7ba-0099-44a7-a2db-01612caef2e8.jpeg> Richard Tucker Executive Director In 2024, with your support, we: * Permanently protected three properties important to salmon and wildlife: a 155-acre forested property with a full mile of Salmon Creek running through it; a 67-acre farm near Quilcene Bay; and a shoreline property in Discovery Bay * Used the innovative Buy+Protect+Sell model to ensure that a 47-acre property in Chimacum remains available for agricultural production forever, while giving the next farmer(s) the opportunity to purchase it at a reduced price * Provided field-based education opportunities for public school students and lifelong learners that deepen their connections to nature Your support also helped us: * Care for 1,179 acres of wildlife habitat at our nature preserves * Construct a wheelchair-accessible trail at Valley View Forest, the future gateway to Chimacum Ridge Community Forest * Engage four AmeriCorps crew members to take on important habitat enhancement projects at our preserves — and hire one as our full-time Field Assistant to care for the land year-round <https://saveland.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=7a8d349c2c&e=f9473ad85e> Chimacum Ridge Community Forest. Photo by Tegra Stone Nuess. Chimacum Ridge Community Forest For more than a decade, Jefferson Land Trust has been working with the community toward a powerful goal: establishing a community forest on Chimacum Ridge. Thanks to outstanding support from generous donors, conservation partners, and granting agencies, the Land Trust was able to purchase the 853-acre ridge from our partner EFM. Once it’s combined with adjacent Valley View Forest, Chimacum Ridge Community Forest will total 918 acres of wetlands, wildlife habitat, and working forestland. This shared living resource will bring ecological, recreational, educational, economic, and cultural benefits to our community — forever. Land Trust staff members are now working with volunteers and contract crews to get the forest ready to open to the public in 2025. Volunteers are also helping guide the establishment of the forest by serving on the seven-member Board of Managers and on three community advisory boards. Over the past year, we’ve enjoyed welcoming community members on public tours of Chimacum Ridge to experience its unique natural features and imagine the exciting possibilities it holds for the future and our community. We’re looking forward to celebrating the opening of Chimacum Ridge Community Forest with you in 2025! <https://saveland.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=9654d853a1&e=f9473ad85e> We invite you to learn more about the Look to the Land campaign, which is supporting the transformation of Chimacum Ridge into a community forest, seeding the creation of a Flexible Opportunity Fund, and growing our Forever Fund Operating Endowment in order to build a strong and resilient future for Jefferson County.
