At this winter’s gathering, Dr. Micaela Colley, OSA’s former Research and Education co-director, will share histories and stories of some of the plant breeding projects that she co-led in the organization over the past 20 years. Dr. Colley is currently continuing her professional pathway in participatory plant breeding as assistant professor at WSU. Her collaboration with OSA will continue into the future, but this gathering offers an opportunity to hear directly from her a summary of the breeding work she coordinated for OSA for nearly two decades. We will also learn about recent, ongoing sweetpotato research and variety selection led by WSU and Laurel Moulton for our region. WSU’s research project is focused on assessing if marketable sweet potatoes can be grown in northwest Washington. WSU is testing wireworm-resistant varieties and advanced breeding lines that are productive and address the issue of wireworms, a major pest on organic farms in the region. RESOURCES Funding & Business 2025 Food Coop Farmer Fund Grant The Food Co-op has $$79,276.67 for farmers. Funds may be used for such things as machinery, construction, supplies, infrastructure development, services, maintenance, or other resources necessary for strengthening the applicant’s business. Fuel Reimburse for farms In case you haven’t seen it yet, the Department of Licensing has rolled out the Agriculture Support Program <https://wsu.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=360ae1ff3a734621548b3598b&id=192f2b91ef&e=b ae7ffec58> , which is providing one-time payments to farms that paid surcharges on exempt fuel purchases in 2023. Payments range from $600 to $4500, depending on the amount of eligible fuel purchases (in gallons). Farmer Support and Information New! Free Federal Funds Grant Writing Assistance Program Learn more info here. <https://wsu.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=360ae1ff3a734621548b3598b&id=9be1423e2a&e=bae7ffec58> In response to the unprecedented clean energy funding available via the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) and Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), the Washington Department of Commerce, in partnership with Hagerty Consulting, is excited to launch the Federal Funds Grant Writing Assistance Program (FFGWAP). County Comprehensive Plan Updates Comp plan updates are underway for our region and it's incredibly vital for farmers to provide input to support the ag sector. Comprehensive Plan includes a 20-year blueprint for local policies, planning and capital facility investment and it is required by Washington State's Growth Management Act (GMA) to be updated periodically. Produce Safety Alliance Grower Trainings Locations around the state AND remote options! <https://wsu.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=360ae1ff3a734621548b3598b&id=5344a9df1c&e=bae7ffec58> Who Should Attend - Fruit and vegetable growers and others interested in learning about produce safety, the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule, Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs), and co-management of natural resources and food safety. The PSA Grower Training Course is one way to satisfy the FSMA Produce Safety Rule requirement outlined in § 112.22(c) that requires ‘At least one supervisor or responsible party for your farm must have successfully completed food safety training at least equivalent to that received under standardized curriculum recognized as adequate by the Food and Drug Administration.'
