With Thanksgiving later this week I’m taking the opportunity to reflect on that which I am thankful for. My beautiful family, this incredible state we get to call home, and the job I get to go to every day. I know it sounds cheesy, but I am truly thankful for the County Road Administration Board. Last week, we attended the County’s County Leader’s Conference (CLC) in Vancouver to announce our big plan - which is also the spotlight of this month's email below! I love this conference – the people, the content, and the vibes. It can be easy to get discouraged when you work in the public sector – there is never enough money, too many competing priorities, and sometimes it can feel that for every step we take forward, we take two back. I get discouraged too – when those who manage our budgets cannot fulfill our requests, when we cannot meet your priorities, and when it feels like it takes forever just to order a box of Kleenex! But for those of us who have committed our careers to public service, we recognize this work is a long game. We cannot move mountains overnight. Government is slow for a reason – we need checks and balances, we need to spend tax dollars responsibly and, most importantly, ensure the health and safety of our communities. It is work that takes time, even when progress is frustratingly slow. We are all in this together, regardless of party and political affiliation. I arrived home feeling recommitted to the work we do, re-energized, refreshed, and ready to take on the coming legislative session. It probably doesn't hurt that I get to sign off for a few days first to be with those I love, eat good food, and turn off my computer. I am thankful for this privilege and for the privilege of working for all of you. Last week, our agency gathered together with counties and partners in Vancouver for the Washington Association of Counties' 2024 County Leadership Conference. This year's theme was "Moving Forward Together" and that resonated deeply with the (ambitious) goals our agency has for 2025. As with most conferences, it was a whirlwind of education sessions, networking, and idea sharing for our staff. However, this conference felt a bit different. But why?
