Burn Pile Operations Begin on Olympic National Forest
OLYMPIA, Wash., Nov. 29, 2024—The Olympic Interagency Fire Management Team will burn debris piles on the Olympic National Forest in the Forks area, Quinault area, Quilcene area, and
within the Dennie Ahl Seed Orchard beginning the week of Dec. 3 and continuing through March 2025.

Operations will only occur during safe weather windows and will conclude by March 2025.
Smoke will be visible at times from nearby trails and roadways while burning is in progress.
Fire crews will remain on scene during burns and then monitor until the fires are out.
The debris piles were generated during fuel reduction projects that involve thinning and cutting of trees and other maintenance operations on the Forest.
Pile burning is a type of prescribed fire where firefighters pile and burn forest debris to reduce an area’s wildfire risk.
Prescribed fire is an important tool for decreasing long-term fire risk to communities and for restoring our forests and making them more resilient to natural fire in the future.
Burning woody debris is also the most convenient and cost-effective method for disposal.
