RE: SMP: weekly web edits & Salish Sea name
Hi Kevin,
The City of Port Townsend is the only existing urban area in Jefferson County - their shoreline is much more densely
developed in comparison to County shorelines. The City's SMP assigns standard setbacks and development regulations
based on shoreline environment designations (SEDs) that range from 25' to 200'. Our Preliminarv Draft SMP assigns
buffers based on the type of water body (100' for lakes, 150' for streams/rivers and marine shorelines), with additional
use regulations established by SEDs.
Our scientific review is documented in the Shoreline Inventorv & Characterization Report. Jefferson County water
quality issues stem from stormwater runoff, septic discharge, use of lawn/crop chemicals, livestock waste and other
sources both inside and outside the City limits. Learn more at Jefferson County Environmental Health online at

Hi Michele,
Why is it that the Port Townsend Shoreline Managment Plan which is based on the "Best Available
Science" of 2007 only calls for a 50" buffer? We all know that Port Townsend is the greatest polluter to the
Puget Sound in Jefferson County. Why is the science so different?
Thanks
Kevin Miller
