Thank you both for listening to our safety concerns about pedestrians crossing back & forth between the Nordland General Store & the parking lot.
Recently I saw an older gentleman crossing with a cane, & I asked him if I could video him from the back as he left. He agreed. The attached video shows him slowly walking, trying to
look both ways & walk. Then you see the truck going by... Sometimes folks who cross are using walkers, or cannot see or hear very well.
Other Problems:
1. Cars come barreling down the hill as they head north. Many people do not slow down to the "suggested speed limit" of 30 mph! And others do not know the store is there, or that it
has reopened. Sometimes they are going over 60 mph!
2. A "suggested speed limit of 30 mph" has no teeth in it, or any consequences to those who do not honor it.
3. Emergency Vehicles sometimes speed by to help someone. That is their job, but it can also be very dangerous, especially if there are no sirens or flashing lights.
4. We are an aging population of retired folks, who move at a slower pace. And there are also kids rushing into to the store. We want to do all that we can do to prevent an accident!
5. We know that Hwy 116 (Flagler Road) is a state highway & is more complicated to work with than a county road.
At a recent Marrowstone Island Community Association Meeting, on 11/26/24, members were offered 4 volunteer options to sign-up for, to help our aging population.
The "Speed Limit Work Group" had the most volunteers (9), so we have a strong desire to do something! MICA has a total membership of 241, so we can mobilize, if that would be helpful.
