Hi Kate,
As the holiday season unfolds and a new year approaches, I find myself reflecting on a few personal mantras that have grown to guide my life. Over time, what began as lighthearted phrases
has become something much more meaningful—simple touchstones that help me navigate my life.
The idea of a mantra isn’t new. It originates from ancient Sanskrit, where the word loosely translates to "instrument of thought." Historically, mantras were used in spiritual practices
to focus the mind, foster peace, and inspire resilience. My idea of having mantras didn’t come from a deliberate spiritual practice but from my natural tendency to find humor in life’s
challenges. I’ve always leaned on humor to lighten the load, but over time, I’ve realized that a few of my funny sayings were guiding principles for my life. “Center your Chi, Grasshopper,”
I’d joke, not knowing how much those words would echo in my life. They’ve become reminders of what truly matters and how I want to navigate the world. Three mantras that center my Chi:
Adapt, Improvise, & Overcome (“Who-rah” optional )
Borrowed from the Marine Corps, this one initially struck me as tongue-in-cheek. After all, I’m far from a Marine. But the more I’ve leaned into it, the more it resonates. Life rarely
follows the path I planned, and adapting to new circumstances, improvising when things go sideways, and overcoming obstacles is, in many ways, the only way forward. This mantra reminds
me that we are all stronger and more resourceful than we often give ourselves credit for.
Peace, Love, and Happiness
This one comes from the free-spirited, idealistic side of me—the part that wants to embrace the world with open arms. It might sound like a hippie cliché, but it holds a timeless truth.
At the heart of everything, isn’t this all I want, what we all want? A little more peace in our lives, a little more love to share, and a little more happiness to hold onto. This mantra
isn’t just a wish; it reminds me to approach life with kindness and optimism, even when things are far from perfect.
How Can I Help?
This one has been with me the longest. Whether offering a helping hand, lending an ear, or easing someone else’s burden, "How can I help?" keeps me connected to the people around me.
It’s a simple way to show I care and serves as a reminder that no matter how uncertain the world feels, kindness is always within reach.
A Holiday Wish
I hope these mantras can offer you a little inspiration or a moment of reflection this holiday season and as we enter the new year. Life is messy, unpredictable, and sometimes downright
hard, but we can all find ways to adapt, improvise, and overcome. We can strive to bring a little more peace, love, and happiness into the world. And most importantly, we can ask, "How
can I help?"—because together, we’re always stronger.
So, from my heart to yours, Wishing you and your loved ones a season filled with warmth, joy, and connection. No matter what comes, remember—you’ve got this. And if you ever need a hand,
I’m here.
Peace, love, and happiness,
