Subject: Jefferson County Shoreline master Plan
Hello,
I need you to clarify information I received today.
Is it true that the Jefferson County Shoreline Master Plan continues to permit gravel
mining conveyors, piers and barge loading on the conservancy shoreline within
Jefferson County?
If this is accurate, than I want you to know I strongly oppose these activities. And I
ask you to take the same action as Kitsap County which prohibits mining and
development activities on conservancy shorelines.
Any future pit to pier projects on or near valuable shorelines would, in my view,
endanger our diminishing wildlife habitats, reduce property values and mar the
natural beauty of our shorelines. I do not want to kayak in waters with barges to
views of commercial conveyers, piers or loading structures.
Moreover, I believe the 1976 Shorelines Hearings Board decision on the Hama
Hama pit to pier project in Mason County sets a precedent to avoid such hazardous
development on Hood Canal.
If you must permit some mining activities, then I ask you to limit these activities to
crushing, screening, washing, stockpiling, and loading in only those areas within the
current, well-defined high intensity shoreline zones.
Since I cannot attend the public hearing planned for June 17th, you may read or
distribute this written submission to assure the expression of my views.
Sincerely,
6/15/2009
