Subject: Jefferson County Shoreline Master Plan; Citizen Comments
We urge you to revise the Jefferson County Shoreline Master Plan so as to prohibit mining use and development,
including conveyors, piers, and barge-loading structures on conservancy shorelines within Jefferson County. This
is especially critical on the Jefferson County shoreline abutting Hood Canal which is a designated shoreline of
national significance. There already is a precedent to avoid such devastation within Hood Canal in the 1976
Shorelines Hearings Board decision on the Hamma Hamma Pit to Pier project in Mason County. It is our strong
opinion that Jefferson County should continue this policy.
In addition, Kitsap County also prohibits mining and development activities on conservancy shorelines.
We urge you to allow shoreline mining related activities, including crushing, screening, washing, stockpiling, and
loading on ships or barges only within well defined high intensity shoreline zones.
Cordially,
Drs. Tom and Margo Wyckoff
