I am also writing letters to our Congressional representatives, Governor Gregoire and state officials. I am against permitting gravel mining conveyors, piers and barge loading on all Puget Sound shorelines, but most vehemently against shorelines on Hood Canal, and all our Jefferson County conservancy shorelines. I am asking you to prohibit mining use and development, including conveyors, piers, and barge loading structures on conservancy shorelines within Jefferson County. I would support your allowing shoreline mining-related activities, including crushing, screening, washing, stockpiling, and loading on ships or barges only within well- defined high intensity shoreline zones or shoreline areas where this activity already exists. Please do not allow any new gravel-mining, barge-loading pier operations to be built along any shoreline ofPuget Sound. It defeats all state endeavors to protect Puget Sound. Gravel mining in existing areas have very lucrative businesses transporting local county materials by truck to exisiting barge- loading, high intensity shoreline areas. A pier would not add anything to the economy; the gravel and natural materials are going out of our county to boost other areas economically. Our wildlife habitats and the future of Hood Canal ride on legislation to prohibit further industrial piers. Citizens of Jefferson County along the Hood Canal continue to work on upgrading our own systems and implementing ways to save Hood Canal habitats. Every local community has activities to involve local citizens to continue to guard Hood Canal habitats. I expect our County and State officials to do the same.
