As someone who spends a lot of time on the canal, the last thing I want to see is activities of this sort destroying the my quality of life on the Canal. I go there to get away from that sort of thing, not to seek it out. Kitsap County prohibits mining and development activities on conservancy shorelines, as does the 1976 Shorelines Hearings Board decision on the Hama Hama pit to pier project in Mason, both of which set the kind of precedence I hope you, as a group, will recognize and respect. I think it's critical that we prohibit mining use and development, including conveyors, piers, and barge loading structures on conservancy shorelines within Jefferson County, that we allow shoreline mining-related activities, including crushing, screening, washing, stockpiling, and loading on ships or barges only within well defined high intensity shoreline zones and that we prohibit all such activities on any Jefferson County shoreline on Hood Canal permanently. The Hood Canal in particular is just too fragile an ecosystem to tolerate such activities. Vic Keranen 6/16/2009
