I urge you to stand strong for the people and wildlife of Jefferson County and not cave into the interests of a few who stand to profit greatly from your changes. I am asking that the following measures be included in the final SMP: - NO fish farming! Aquaculture of shellfish can be done in an environmentally sound and sensitive manner. Fish pens have proved over and over to be quite damaging to the local environment and to the fish populations in general. They use a significant amount of energy to bring the pelletized fish food made from fish caught in the Southern Hemisphere, as well as concentrating diseases. Several of the wild salmon stocks in Canada are in jeopardy due to fish farming. - reset the limit on building permits to 150 feet from shore. This will mitigate the erosion of the shoreline, reduce the toxins produced by development from entering the marine ecosystem, and promote healthier intertidal life zones. They most certainly will become "death zones" with the type of uncontrolled growth planned for our shorelines. - remove any plan for the Pit-to-Pier conveyor belt in Shine. There have been countless studies and commentary regarding the damage to the ecosystem in Shine as well as the strong possibility of serious damage to the Hood Canal Bridge should a barge ram into the pilings. Thank you for your thoughtful consideration of my concerns. They echo those of a majority, albeit a silent one at this point, of the citizens of Jefferson County. Sincerely, Laura Tucker 91 E.
