Subject: Jefferson County Shoreline Master Plan
Hood Canal is a unique resource and should be treated as such in the Jefferson
County Shoreline Master Plan.
The latest version of the Jefferson County Shoreline Master Plan continues to
permit gravel mining conveyors, piers and barge loading on the conservancy
shoreline - even within Hood Canal. This would allow future pit to pier projects to
dominate these valuable shorelines and endanger our diminishing wildlife habitats.
Kitsap County prohibits mining and development activities on conservancy
shorelines.
The 1976 Shorelines Hearings Board decision on the Hama Hama pit to pier project
in Mason County sets a precedent to avoid such devastation with Hood Canal.
Please prohibit mining use and development, including conveyors, piers, and barge
loading structures on conservancy shorelines within Jefferson County.
Please allow shoreline mining-related activities, including crushing, screening,
washing, stockpiling, and loading on ships or barges only within well defined high
intensity shoreline zones.
Please prohibit all such activities on any Jefferson County shoreline on Hood Canal.
