Jefferson County Commissioners
Dear Commissioners,
Please respect the important safeguards for the extensive resource that is Jefferson
County's shoreline. In the science of oceanography we are just beginning to understand the
complex ecology of shoreline and its alteration by human activity. In many ways the near-shore
contributes to the quality of life, both for humans and the ecosystem Overdevelopment of coastal
highlands
and waterfront has removed much habitat in other regions of the country.
Elimination or reduction of buffer zones, permitting unrestricted aquaculture and other
weakening of other safeguards of the SMP, as outlined by People for Puget Sound, should be resisted.
It would be good to support and utilize extensive near-shore and shore-front monitoring as part
of the County's environmental protection. There is volunteer expertise in the region which could assist
with this.
Yours,
Peter Rhines, Professor of Oceanography
