Subject: Shoreline Master Program
We are aware that the SMP continues to permit pit-to-pier operations and
associated barge loading within our conservancy shoreline including Hood Canal.
This is totally unacceptable and must never be allowed. It is not allowed in our
neighboring Kitsap County and for good reason. Congressman Norm Dicks is
opposed to it, the U.S. Navy has taken a position against it, the public at large is
against it, and we are against it.
And yet the Jefferson County Planning Department continues to side with a
destructive and anti-environmental industrial project despite overwhelming
opposition. This provision in the SMP must be corrected, now, and promote
cooperation and respect for the populace and our fellow county on the other side of
the canal.
