What a wonderful turnout we had for the holiday events Dec. 7th! From the Community Treelighting & Santa visit to the festive fun with Wild Rose Chorale and PT Artscape helping kids create holiday ornaments--it was a night to remember. Santa stole the show with photo opps aboard the Kiwanis Choo Choo and joyful visits before leading the crowd in lighting up the Community Tree and the historic Fire Bell Tower—a magical moment for all! The celebration didn’t stop there—many of you kept the festive spirit alive by joining the First Saturday Art Walk in the evening, and shopping and dining locally. The Port Townsend Public Library was filled with joy and whimsy this month thanks to our community’s amazing artistry. They were honored to have Mayor David Faber jury the gingerbread contest this year and he stated, “I had a great time judging this year's Gingerbread House contest. I was really impressed with the creativity of so many of the entries, and I really struggled to name just one winner in each category. The Raccoon Lodge edged out the other entries for "Most Creative" because of its strong and direct relevance to Port Townsend; I selectedThe Kindness Go Round for the "Under 12" category because of the spirit of community and cooperation involved in its creation; and I selected the Discworld entry for "Most Literary" because... well, I love Terry Pratchett! Great work, everyone!” This year the library had 22 entries from all ages. The contest is sponsored by the Friends of the Library and the Port Townsend Main Street Program. Soulful Abundance was born out of Jenn’s desire to reconnect to her artist-creative nature during lockdown. After decades of running an accounting practice, Jenn felt a need for joyful play and a passion for a more soulful life. Tapping into a life-long love of the metaphysical world, Jenn started creating crystal art and selling crystals on Etsy. After years of working from home and a desire to re-engage in the community, she opened the Soulful Abundance crystal store in the Good Templar’s Hall building downtown in December 2022, where she also runs her accounting and money-coaching business. Now celebrating 2 years of shopkeeping, Jenn is joined by her dog Sophie as she shares her love for crystals. Stop by for the good vibes and some Sophie love. Jenn has been a part of the Port Townsend business community for almost 25 years. She is the former owner of The English Inn B&B, and ran the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce from 2009-2010 and served on their board prior to that. The Port Townsend Creative District efforts have been coordinated by the nonprofit PT Main Street Program for the past five years. Main Street has coordinated monthly planning meetings, grant writing efforts, artists’ gatherings and the Soundcheck Arts Festival. Working in collaboration with the Creative District Subcommittee, The City and the Main Street Board, we have developed arts-related infrastructure projects such as the Creative District website, the Tyler Plaza Lighting Project and the Art Marker Wayfinding Project. The implementation of the Artist Directory and the Arts & Culture Plan have been key projects made possible with the collaboration of The City, local artists, arts consultants and community input. The Port Townsend Main Street Program staff, board and volunteers have provided stability and support to the Creative District and it has been rewarding work. In January of 2025, the Creative District will transition to be housed under Community Services, a new department of the City of Port Townsend which will continue to build connections in support of artists and our town’s vibrant cultural sector.
