Commissioner's Proceedings Vol. P
Jefferson County, Washington
~ "JrtVAML_..~A.r.!"'1 te..~.,.::'~
The Jefferson County Board of Equalization reconvened at l:30p.m., with all members
present. There was one petition to be heard. petition No.3
Timber Traders, Inc., P.O. Box 487, Mercer Island, Washington 98040, represented by
~Ir. Vincent C. Kretz - (sole owner) - to request a revision in the assessed valuation on
five (5) State Timber Sales as listed in their Personal Property Petition _ assigned No.3.
Prior to opening his remarks in regard to his request for change in assessed values, Mr.
Kretz stated to the Board he wished to point out that there had inadvertently been an error
in the Company's listing of Personal Property Sale No. 32455. Sale had been returned to the
Assessor at a valuation of $148,1389.00. This \vas erroneous, a clerk had mistakenly computed
the value from a different sale, The correct return for Sale No. 32455 should have been
listed at $492,182.00. The Assessor was directed to verify these fi gures and ammend the
personal property return accordingly.
Mr. Kretz then referred to a letter written by his canpany to the Board of Equalizat
ion, dated June 25, 1970. The point of 1his letter is that the Assessor should have deter-
mined the true and fair value of the Timber Sales a~ of 1 January 1970, and not have made
the assessment on the values as returned by Timber Xraders, Inc. on their 1970 personal pro-
perty return at bid value. ~Ir. Kretz produced a revised listing of the Timber Sales in
question. This ~ndicates that in their consideration tile sales should be recomputed on a
volume bases, \'li th Iiemloch valued at $48.76 per ~ and other species as sh own on the revised
list.
The County Assessor presented his answer to Personal Property petition No.3. TIle
Assessor pointed out that the assessment in this cnse was m~de on the values as returned by
this company in l-larch 1970. THat tile assessmen t was not arbitrary, but r/as made in the same
manner and on the same bases as like property, ie. other State Timber Sales as returned by
various other purchasers tvithout discount from bid prices. That to the best of his know-
ledge, bid prices on State Timber Sales for the 1st. quarter of 1970 were not appreciably
lorlCr than during 1969. Also, as stated at a prior hearing, one other company wich had
submitted a discounted listing on State Timber Sales, had accepted the Assessor's assessment
at full bid value without protest; it would be inequitable, in Viel'l of assessment at bid
prices of all other State Sales, to reduce the value in this case.
It was the decision of the Board that the assessment in this case, as corrected by
the Assessor, be upheld.
There being no fur.ther business, the Board recessed at 3:30p.m. to reconvene on
Auaust 3, 1970.
