Norman P. Knott, from the Department of Ecology, appeared to present preliminary information re: Coastal Zone
Management Grant for EstuClrine Sanctuary. He said the Federal Coastal Zone Management Act provides monies fo~
states or local governments to use on a matching basis to acquIre estuarine sanctuaries, which is a place set aside
for research to find out the result of mans imp3ct on estuarine shoreline areas. One area they are interested in '
for this purpose is approximately 200 acrea (fee acquistion) in th~ Thor ndyke Creek area. The project would
depend on what arrangements could be made with the private property owners who would be given compensation
for their land. The major benefit to the county would be the informntl,on received from the research, but if the
project is approved, it would have to be monitored by the county.
'fhe Boord questions whether or not the county would benefit suffiCiently from the project to offset the
loss of revenm, and therefore, f'equests additional info!'mation before making a determination.
