In 2022, Washington’s Commissioner of Public Lands, Hilary Franz, made a groundbreaking decision <https://default.salsalabs.org/T55bde67b-1def-469d-ba9f-5a953e9ed3c7/e1f9ba72-dc83-4f20-90cd-07d9d1ee4
1b3> to reject net pen operator Cooke Aquaculture's applications for new decade-long leases, removing all commercial net pens from Puget Sound. At the same time, she issued a landmark
executive order initiating a process to permanently prohibiting commercial net pen aquaculture in Washington marine waters. Together, these actions made 2024 the first year in four
decades without these damaging, polluting operations in our waters.
We've already removed this dangerous industry from our public waters and now, we need your help to make it permanent!
On January 7, 2025, Washington's Board of Natural Resources will vote to officially adopt a rule permanently banning commercial net pens. If passed, Washington will become the first
place in the world to successfully remove and permanently protect its waters from this harmful industry.
But this fight won't be easy and we don't have much time. Cooke Aquaculture and its allies in the industry are actively working to influence the vote in a desperate last attempt to return
to our public waters. We’ve come too far to let corporate interests undermine the incredible progress we’ve worked so hard to achieve.
It’s time to work together one final time to permanently ban commercial net pen aquaculture to permanently protect Puget Sound for all current and future generations.
