Time: 10am - noon | Location: Jefferson County Fairgrounds, Port Townsend Christmas Bird Count Field Trips The Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society (OPAS) is hosting three field trips this December as part of their bird counting efforts. The Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is a long-standing community science project organized by the National Audubon Society. It began in 1900 as an alternative to the traditional Christmas bird hunt, where people would count birds instead of hunting them. The CBC takes place annually between December 14 and January 5 and involves thousands of volunteers across the Western Hemisphere. Participants count every bird they see or hear within a designated 15-mile diameter circle over a 24-hour period. Audubon and other organizations use data collected in this long-running wildlife census to assess the health of bird populations, and to help guide conservation action. If you’re interested in bird counting but are not quite ready for the annual bird count field trips, we encourage you to join the beginner friendly Wednesday Morning Bird Walks at Railroad Bridge Park. These walks are every Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. and are great for learning how to identify and tally birds while contributing to long term data on bird populations at Railroad Bridge Park.  Events Calendar — OLYMPIC PENINSULA AUDUBON SOCIETY <https://straitern.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=02015d57f26d1f2ba5e8307ed&id=b86070e7f2&e=ef6991ce4e> Winter Twig ID Workshop with North Olympic Salmon Coalition January 23rd, 2025 | 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. | Lyre Conservation Area Are you interested in plant identification?
