Big news for seniors and families in Washington state and across the country: prescription drug costs are now capped at $2,000 a year for everyone on Medicare Part D, thanks to the Inflation
Reduction Act (IRA) Democrats passed to lower costs for families.
This change—which went into effect January 1st, 2025—will be a game-changer for seniors who have faced skyrocketing prescription drug prices for far too long. The cost of life-saving
medications has forced too many families to make impossible choices between paying for their prescriptions or other essentials. With these changes Democrats passed—which every single
Republican voted against—millions of American seniors are set to save hundreds, or even thousands of dollars a month.
This is just one of the many ways Democrats are working to put money back in the pockets of American families. In addition to the prescription drug cap, Democrats also capped the cost
of insulin for people on Medicare at $35 a month, and for the first time ever, allowed Medicare to negotiate lower prices for prescription drugs on behalf of seniors. They've already
negotiated 10 drugs to have significantly lower prices beginning in 2026, and 15-20 more drugs will be added to the negotiating table each following year!
To me, it’s simple: lifesaving medications just don’t do any good if people can’t afford them. Filling your prescriptions should never require emptying your savings account. So just
know that I will keep working to lower health care costs for everyone.
