Our ancient forests are at risk as proposed changes to the Northwest Forest Plan could increase logging and threaten clean rivers, salmon, and iconic landscapes. <http://image.emails.sierraclub.org/lib/fe8f1372746d007871/m/22/1a6411f1-d430-4730-a89c-6df5a08e58b0.png> 🚨The future of our region's ancient forests is on the line.🚨 The U.S. Forest Service is considering changes to the Northwest Forest Plan -- some of which could lead to more commercial logging and threaten the clean rivers, thriving salmon, and iconic forests we cherish. Take action now to tell the Forest Service to protect our forests and focus on improving -- not dismantling -- the plan. <http://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=adc478eae382116253b1dbb179dddda846252d 1ea6f69e24452db9fc088519271e8950247e4b85e675c372eb88dbde2bcfa124c25d3fd73bf4d7a9e5c7a43a3a> Take Action! <http://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=adc478eae3821162a412b0b34ac73a2c3b8bcc8240150bf373120088422fcdea66a4ed18ffb2186e04e5fbbb2b467f79af493520c76a15b15fadefc471df1906> <http://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=adc478eae382116252f9a6ce8cc236a56393bf67a7795309204ce6fa42cdc2cd86537c397fabe1743923e786526373301349db4e18b4a4bf4d70653568a47424> Creek Through Lush Rainforest Olympic National Park, Washington Photo by Bartfett/iStock Dear John, The Pacific Northwest is renowned for its clean rivers, vibrant salmon runs, and majestic old-growth forests. These natural treasures are largely safeguarded by the Northwest Forest Plan -- a groundbreaking approach to forest management that was enacted 30 years ago after nearly all of our ancient forests were cut. The Northwest Forest Plan still protects the strong majority of the region's remaining old forests. But the Plan's future is now uncertain. The Forest Service is considering amendments that could open the door to increased logging and undermine the protections that have preserved these critical ecosystems for decades. Why does this matter? The Northwest Forest Plan isn't just a policy -- it's a lifeline for our forests, water, and wildlife. When it was created in 1994, it represented the first large-scale, science-based plan for managing federal forestlands. The Plan: * Protected irreplaceable old-growth forests. * Preserved critical habitat for imperiled species. * Set a precedent for forest management that prioritized intact forests -- not timber harvest. To be sure, there are important reasons to amend the Northwest Forest Plan. Tribes were functionally left out of the process, thereby omitting critical indigenous knowledge from the Plan. And we have experienced changes since 1994. Across the globe, we are far more aware of the value of forests in the fight against climate change as they absorb and store carbon from the atmosphere. Locally, we have seen a recent increase in wildfires, and we need to ensure we are following the best science to protect people, property, and forests. Overall the Plan's original vision to conserve intact forests is more relevant today than ever before. We can and should amend the Northwest Forest Plan to address its shortcomings - but this process is on the wrong track. Now we risk losing key protections. Proposed changes to the Northwest Forest Plan could undo decades of progress by prioritizing commercial and salvage logging over conservation. This would jeopardize the ecosystems that are vital for clean water, healthy wildlife populations, and carbon sequestration. Your Voice Can Tip the Scales. Public comments have the power to shape the Forest Service's decisions. History shows that when enough people speak up, federal agencies have to listen and adapt. Your voice can ensure that the Northwest Forest Plan is strengthened -- not dismantled. <http://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=adc478eae3821162c68a1a45dbcd4046ad1d3ef9084b7c6d40f0ed6cd1ada0ade407c519cbeb0619d21b46f3eacb 4aaefc409e2ee05db97cd484b89b68a178e2> Will you act now? Submit a comment today urging the Forest Service to: * Protect and restore all old-growth forests and imperiled species. * Incorporate Indigenous perspectives and stewardship. * Address climate change by recognizing the carbon value of our forests. * Rely on best-available science for forest management in an era of wildfire. * Recognize that protections for old forests, rivers, and species are what has made the NW Forest Plan successful. Do not roll back these key provisions. Personalized comments make an even greater impact. Add why protecting forests matters to you -- whether it's clean water, wildlife, or combating climate change. <http://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?q s=adc478eae38211629d97f518140952ce6b6ae995bbf592eabbce06949840505bfd44fc7ca97c06a34ea0b15fdab12c7d104ab0f9fa75e01df161224f0188bdd4> For example: "Protecting forests is important to me because I value our region's natural beauty and want future generations to experience it as we have."
