The reason Echol Cole and Robert Walker Memphis sanitation workers were crushed in the garbage truck because they were not all allowed into the sanitation office where it was warm and
there were showers because they were black. They climbed into the garage truck because it was winter and they were freezing so they climbed into the garbage truck where they were crushed
by their white co-workers.
MLK came to Memphis where sanitation workers who wore signs saying "I am a man" was responded with the national guard pointing rifles. Martin was assassinated the next day.
For MLK day " everyone is welcome" by the Marine Center to come and pick up garbage on the beach left by economically privileged consumers who are thoughtless. Low income and homeless
people are welcome.
Even though the Port Townsend Yacht Club would be the most inexpensive and logical solution to a homeless day center/ urban rest stop that is legally zoned and could be up and running
in a week . ADA ready showers toilets commercial kitchen multi purpose room and office with shelves and closet. Moms laundry across the street. Only the building itself would have
to be insured not the land underneath.
2023 and 2024 saw many closures to access to showers at Marina's and Parks and the 209a shelter and the YMCA which will only remain open for another two years I hear.
Disenfranchised folks are welcome to pick up the garbage of the economically privileged on MLK Day, but if the community wants a homeless day center for marginalized folks with disability
they are garbage. It would not be hard to get the funds for the yacht club or for the lease for the land. The club is 375 thousand, the land lease 4200 a year for up to 50 years.
Homeless people would have access to showers, laundry and food. Day storage could be done for bikes and backpacks.
Homeless folks would not have to travel all over for just survival needs they could focus on housing and jobs.
Regarding housing, we are six times behind Europe when is comes to social housing. It's the housing inventory stupid. Several mobile home park owners have jacked up the space rents
so high residents who own their mobile homes are at risk of being homeless.
Anyone can be homeless look at Los Angeles if you need an example.
Everyday government agencies, contractors, providers wake up and their financial architects and engineers try to figure out a way to sink the Titanic faster and how to build fewer life
boats before it nosedives. I just want to build more life boats. Mia Gregarson of Sea Tac /Kirkland district has authored a bill to make homeless folks a protected class. Let's help
her get it passed.
