HomeMy WebLinkAbout011325 email - Press Release_ Free Firearm Safety Community Education EventGood afternoon, On Saturday, February 8th from 10:00 am-1:00 pm, Jefferson County Public Health (JCPH) is hosting a safe firearm storage event and giveaway, in partnership with Seattle Children’s Hospital and Community Health Plan of Washington. The event will take place at Gardiner Community Center at 980 Old Gardiner Rd, Sequim, WA 98382 and the community is invited to learn about the importance of safe firearm storage, receive a free lock box or trigger lock, and to get trained on how to properly use them. Children are welcome at the event, and for those 18 and up, we will offer one free device per person. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that in 2021, for people over 45 years old, suicide by firearm was more common than homicide. And after age 45, most firearm deaths were suicides, and by age 75, 94% of firearm deaths were suicides. Practicing safe firearm storage is a crucial and effective way to protect individuals of all ages, reduce the risk of firearm injuries, and save lives. Since 2014, Seattle Children’s has provided education and distributed safety devices to enhance home safety and address barriers to safe firearm storage for any household. If you are interested in learning more about the event, please visit www.seattlechildrens.org/firearmsafety or if you would like to request an interview ahead of the event, please contact Liz Anderson at LAnderson@co.jefferson.wa.us.
