George and Charles Clements and their band are on an ever-evolving journey into Americana music. With roots, rock, bluegrass, jazz, and classical influences, they aim to capture their singer-songwriter sensibilities in a unique blended voice, at once enthralling and intimate, groovy and serene. The brothers have been playing and writing music together since as long as they can remember and The Clements Brothers marks their first project together since playing in the internationally touring grass-roots band, The Lonely Heartstring Band. January 17 When Westerners think of Chinese celebrations, they automatically think of the Lunar New Year, but the Lunar New Year doesn’t begin until two weeks later, with the first full moon. Public celebrations don’t take place until the moon proves once again that it knows how to become round and make things grow. In honor of this event, the Chinese indulge in public displays of likenesses of the moon such as lanterns and round sweet dumplings. January 21 / 24 We’re in Gansu Province, rolling through a stretch of Gobi Desert and the odd sand dune or two. The town of Wuwei is behind us, and on our right is one of China’s greatest wonders—the Great Wall. The wall here was built during the Han Dynasty to keep out the Huns. January 28 / 31 We’re on a stretch of paved highway that runs the length of theGansu Corridor, paralleling the Great Wall. Wuwei is behind us, and before us is the town of Zhangye. The only sign of civilation in between is the town of Shandan, and it’s not much of a sign. Shandan’s only claim to fame is a New Zealander who came there to set up an arts school. Think of it: the kids she met in preschool were the same kids she knew all the way through high school. Small circle indeed! Now she's facing a much bigger world. And much smarter kids. In a small high school such as Port Townsend, it’s not overwhelmingly difficult to get good grades. She topped it off with being in ballet, on the robotics team, student government and even building a kayak as part of her Maritime studies program. Needless to say, she is now finding PT rather small. Can she handle the increased competition of a university?
