Improperly designed or installed monitoring wells be a liability. Poor annular seals or casing joints allow contaminants from unscreened zones to bias sampling results, see 1 and 2, In the worst case, contaminants pass between aquifers and actually aggravate the situation being evaluated, see 3 and 4, in-house design and development of a casing perforator for use on PVC welis has aliowed us to cost-effectively abandon improperly installed monitors while complying with regulatory requirements. This involves perforation of the PVC casing and pressure backfilling of the borehole wilh the appropriate materials, e,g" bentonite clay slurry andlor cement grout. These minimum distances shall comply with local health regulations as appropriate. The)' may be used in a natural development or gravel-packed type of construction.
