Greg,
It was not my intention to wound your feelings. I am not sure what it was that I said that was harmful, but I apologize all the same.
None of this should be about feelings. None of this should be about personal attacks. None of this should be about personal anything. THAT is the point I was trying to make... To avoid
making it personal.
It is clear to me that I failed to convey the correct message or that you did not receive the message I attempted to convey, so I will try again.
The thing that offended me was you making a personal attack against Shellie. You misrepresented her actions, sentiments, positions, engagement, and value. You disparaged and undercut
her and put words in her mouth that I have never experienced her to utter herself. I daresay that I have an infinitely more thorough comprehension of Shellie’s positions, actions, and
character than you, and I still refrain from putting words in her mouth. This is a woman who is perfectly capable of speaking for herself, and she requires no translation from either
of us.
The comments you made last week were unnecessary and inflammatory. We are talking about someone who has repeatedly demonstrated her commitment to the people of this county and a betterment
of the process. This makes it appear that you are emotionally entwined in the decision and that should not be the case. This is NOT a personal process; it is a public process and a
public asset. Allowing a clouded judgement or an emotional response makes me wonder if you are able to make clear decisions about this project which represent the best outcome for the
public.
There have been numerous times during this process, we have seen things take a turn for the worse based on emotional judgements. Every criticism I have offered has been about improving
the process and the outcome for the public. I do not think I have called a bad shot from the beginning and I have not changed my mind about the problems which will need to be resolved.
To my mind, this has always been about betterment for the public, and that is why I have raised several complaints. First it was about the secret meetings that the public was prohibited
from attending and only hand-selected PT people were allowed to participate in, the location at the farthest end of the county which reduced accessibility, and the funding without public
input. I am relieved for your takeover of the committee, your inclusion of reps from across the county, and a change in the location. Thank you for that. The funding issue will be up
to the voters to decide.
I have been in contact with Diane McDade to discuss the survey and the Chamber’s feedback. She was very welcoming of our feedback and offered numerous compliments. She said JAC has included
many of our suggestions in the latest revision of the survey. I have offered my full support to ensure that we can collaborate to reach the broadest number of respondents in an effort
to gain as accurate an understanding as is possible of what the people think of this aquatic center. I am very pleased that this data is finally being sought because its glaring absence
has been a complaint of mine for a long time.
I kinda went down a rabbit hole just there because these subjects are intertwined. I want you to know that both Shellie and I have had criticisms of the process, or lack thereof, but
it has not been the concept that is the major problem. The process needed significant improvement, and we have been here to offer the criticism that was intended to help improve the
outcome. It has been frustrating to watch, as what appeared to be a trainwreck, was speeding down the tracks and nobody with any control could see the flaws or they were just willing
to allow these major problems to persist, while us nobodies in the peanut gallery stood inside a soundproof room screaming that the train was derailing. Don’t we all want the same thing...
a sound process which will yield the best results for the county? Doesn’t that require understanding the complaints and finding solutions? We have found some solutions by working together,
haven’t we? The latest proposal is better than any of the previous proposals, isn’t it? That would not be the case without all of these critics poking holes in the soft spots, would
it? Why has it been a lot like pulling teeth to get the powerful players to see that we were not raising complaints for the sake of being jerks... we raised fatal flaws in an effort
to resolve the problems. I am quite tired of being treated like the problem when all we have done is to offer solutions.
I do not wish to wound you. I drove to the PT on Monday for a single reason. I felt that if I was going to say the things I said that the least I could do was to have enough respect
to say it to your face and not hide behind a zoom screen. I knew it would be difficult to hear but it was my intention to prevent it from happening again and I hope I succeeded in conveying
the message that the public participants deserve respectful treatment. Anyone willing to commit to the level of participation and high value feedback, like Shellie does every day, should
be treated respectfully, whether you agree with her or not. EVERY DAY. Seriously, Shellie works on countless county projects, as a volunteer, every day.
I was quite shocked at what I heard last week, and I thought my comments were necessary and that I was obligated to express my distaste.
I apologize for hurting your feelings.
Jean
