Yet I really appreciate this opportunity. The only reason I do speak publicly is because it amplifies the voices of the most vulnerable of the immigrant community. Those who are out there working in the fields. Those who have been separated from their children, those who do not speak English, all my hard working people. People ask me with curiosity, why did I decide to migrate? What drives someone, to leave everything they have known, and venture out here to start from scratch? The answer is very simple, understanding immigration is not that complicated. Look around you: don't birds migrate in search of food and better living conditions? How is it possible to denigrate the people who put food on our table at the expense of their hurting backs? Have you ever seen how these people do the hardest and lowest paid jobs? These Jobs have not been stolen, but have been earned through hard work and perseverance. The undocumented and documented immigrant community pays millions of dollars in taxes every year. Yes! Undocumented people pay taxes. Yet my people are afraid to even come ask for the most basic needs like food, housing, or even medical services. So many immigrants pay into social Security but they will never see any benefits from it. Fortunately, non-profit organizations offer support to the immigrant community and try to meet the needs of the people. This being a sign of the humanity that still exists. I AM ONE of the reasons the false rhetoric is attacking non-profits. They don't want me standing here. Because our stories are powerful and finally, it is something no one can steal from us. The people of Port Townsend are a generous community and have provided a lot of support to immigrants. You could ask yourself how many non-profits have you supported? Yes! There is a need for immigration reform, and it cannot be accomplished without the immigrant community! We will not act from fear, but from empowerment! Look around you, WE ARE ONE HUMAN RACE! We were overwhelmed with the level of support from the standing room only crowd. JCIRA board members and staff, as well as Police Chief Olson and Interim Sheriff Andy Pernsteiner, and Brenda Calderon, representative from WAISN (Washington Immigrant Solidarity Network) all spoke on the current situation, and how we will respond to the anti-immigrant policies of the Trump administration. Thanks to WAISN, who is committed to language justice, for providing the interpretation equipment making it possible for two JCIRA members to provide the evening's presentations in Spanish. The meeting opened with a song celebrating our immigrant history <https://jcira.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e6a5ce9c533fce19d6336ca83&id=b6a0547c5a&e=e9fe4694e3> , and an excerpt was shown from a video about past abuses by the Border Patrol on the Olympic Peninsula, particularly in the Forks area. The last part of the meeting was devoted to people signing up for one of the JCIRA volunteer teams. The response from the community was overwhelming, and many have signed up to volunteer to help. Melissa Long has agreed to be our volunteer coordinator, and several committees are now forming. Our volunteer teams include: * Rapid Response Team * Federal Immigration Law and Policies * Media/Communications * Accompaniment * Family Emergency Preparedness In addition to these teams JCIRA could use volunteers in other areas. The next session is February 5 from 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm for parents and other community members. Washington wins lawsuit against GEO - In January, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the verdict against the GEO Group (GEO) that runs the Northwest ICE Processing Center in Tacoma. Then Attorney General (now Governor) Bob Ferguson had sued GEO for its violation of Washington state's minimum wage law by forcing detainees at the center to work at for only $1 per day cleaning, cooking, and performing other duties. The jury decided that the multi-billion dollar company must pay all of its workers the minimum wage of $13.69 an hour or more. The violations went back more than 15 years, and the court directed GEO to pay $13.7 million to more than 10,000 individuals. The state was also awarded $5.9 million. Federal Judge Issues Restraining Order in Support of Birthright Citizenship - A federal judge issued a nationwide temporary restraining order against Donald Trump’s unconstitutional attempt to deny birthright citizenship to children of immigrants born in the United States. The judge castigated the administration attorneys for even bringing the case before the court. He said, “I have difficulty understanding how a member of the bar would state unequivocally that this is a constitutional order. It just boggles my mind.” Governor Ferguson Issues and Executive Order to Address Family Separation - On January 24, Governor Bob Ferguson created a rapid response team aimed at reducing harms caused by President Trump’s immigration enforcement policies. These policies will destabilize families and harm children who are separated from their deported or detained parents or primary caregivers. Congress' First Act Seeks to Detain Immigrants - The first bill sent to Trump to sign was the Laken-Riley Act, passing the House of Representatives and Senate within days after the inauguration. The new law requires anyone who entered the U.S. without a green card, non-immigrant, or tourist visa who is convicted of crimes such as burglary, theft, or other violent crimes must be detained by the Department of Homeland Security. Among the problems with this new law include the fact that it not only applies to those convicted of crimes, but also those who have been charged with, or arrested for crimes, eliminating the due process of individuals who should be entitled to a hearing. Job Opening at JCIRA Center Administrator/Volunteer Coordinator—We’re looking for a dynamic, committed person to organize and operate the JCIRA Multicultural Center. Position starts at 20 hours per week for $30/hour. Must be fluent in Spanish and English and have direct connection to the immigration experience. Mira a tu alrededor, ¿no emigran los pájaros en busca de comida y mejores condiciones de vida? ¿Cómo es posible denigrar a las personas que ponen comida en nuestra mesa a costa de sus doloridas espaldas? ¿Has visto alguna vez cómo estas personas realizan los trabajos más duros y peor pagados? Estos trabajos no han sido robados, sino que se han ganado a base de trabajo duro y perseverancia. La comunidad de inmigrantes indocumentados y documentados paga millones de dólares en impuestos cada año. Sí, los indocumentados pagan impuestos. Sin embargo, mi gente tiene miedo incluso de venir a pedir las necesidades más básicas como comida, vivienda o incluso servicios médicos. Muchos inmigrantes pagan a la Seguridad Social pero nunca verán ningún beneficio de ella.
