HomeMy WebLinkAbout020325 email - Want to set the record straight re_ the Brinnon Community and studies & grants___ALERT: BE CAUTIOUS This email originated outside the organization. Do not open attachments or click on links if you are not expecting them. Dear Commissioners, I heard the comment made this morning, regarding that the Brinnon Community did not want to have studies done in regards to the Flood Plain issues challenging Brinnon. To set the record straight the community is not opposed to studies or grants. Rather it is challenged by past proposals and grants, and how the community was not engaged in the process. A good example specifically is the FEMA grant that was proposed by Brent Butler over two years ago to the Brinnon Community. The concern was the community was informed by Mr. Butler that we would have no input or participation in the RFP process, no input on the consultant picked either or the outcome of the grant process. The under lying concern the community expressed, leading to saying “no" to that specific grant proposal was simply a trust issue. Not a desire to prevent any studies or grants. The community did not trust how the grant would be used, and the concern was it would be used to further prevent any economic development in Brinnon, besides the Resort. It is also my belief that the Resort will have a BIG impact on Brinnon and it would be detrimental to not seek solutions to solving Brinnon’s flood issues and the impact that would have on our little community. It is important to understand that the past lack of community engagement has lead to trust issues. Please do not confuse that issue with the idea that the community doesn’t want any studies or grants. As always please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions and know that I am committed to working with county government to help mitigate the Flood Plain issues and challenges. I'm convinced there are solutions, and the recently formed South County Task Force looks forward to working with local, state and federal organizations to come up with a plan and show Washington State how a small community can work together to solve this problem. Thank you for your time and consideration regarding this message and my intent to set the record straight.
