I arrived in the area about 10:00 am and departed about 12:15 pm. During this period, I checked two former osprey nesting sites, and located a new, active nest site, 1. Teal Lake Village Nest The Teal Lake Village osprey nest was active until the nest was destroyed by a storm during the winter of 1994-95. Someone erected a platform on an adjacent tree, but there are no records of the constructed platform ever being used. In 1996, a nest was reported north of Paradise Bay road, north of Teal Lake Village, and east of Topside Court. The nest was approximately 0.2 miles north of the former nest. I inspected the site in 199'7 and again in 1998, but found no activity in either year (Raedeke Associates, Inc. April 28, 1998). 2. Machais Loop Nest An active osprey nest on a lot south of Machais Loop was reported in 1995 and 1996. I visited the site in 1997 and 1998 and did not find either nesting material or osprey activity (Raedeke Associates, Inc. 1998). There was no sign of a nest and no sign of nesting activity this year. A house is being constructed on the lot to the north of the nest site, 3. Ludlow Bay Road Nest To gain another perspective of the two nest areas discussed above, I used a spotting scope from the Port Ludlow Marina to inspect the Machais Loop area and the Teal Lake Village/Topside Court area. I observed no nest platforms and no osprey activity in either area. There were adults fishing over the bay and returning to the nest with prey.. I located the active nest midway between Ludlow Bay Road and the beach on the lot northeast of 1011 Ludlow Bay Road (Figure 1). The nest is in the dying top of a grand fir approximately 20 inches diameter at breast height. The adults were feeding the juveniles during my visit to the area. This was the first time I observed this nest. It is located more than a mile from the Machais Loop developments, and 0.8 miles from the Teal Lake developments. Ms. Helen Devine, resident at 1011 Ludlow Bay Road, reports that osprey have been present at the nest and reared young in 1997, 1998, and this year (1999). It is possible that this pair of osprey (Ludlow Bay Road Territory) were formerly at Teal Lake/Topside Court. 4. Other Osprey Activity in the Area. Driving up to Port Ludlow, I observed the osprey nest site on Paradise Bay Road in Section 26, Township 28 N, Range 1. The nest structure was visible from the road and there was an adult osprey flying over the area. This site is approximately 3 miles southeast of Port Ludlow and activities at Port Ludlow probably have no effect on this territory. 5. Conclusions At the time of my visit, osprey had returned to the area, established nests, and hatched young. There was no sign of either nests or osprey activity at either the Teal Lake site or the Machias Loop site. The Teal Lake osprey may have relocated their nest site to the site I observed on May 4`".
