JEFFERSON COUNTY
BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
AGENDA REQUEST
TO: Board of County Commissioners
Philip Morley, County Administrator
FROM: Pinky Mingo, Environmental Health and Water Quality
Director
Tami Pokorny, Natural Resources Program Coordinator
DATE: January 4, 2021
SUBJECT: Request to appoint Ron Rempel to serve a 4-year term on the
Conservation Futures Citizen Oversight Committee.
STATEMENT OF ISSUE:
Public Health requests that the County Commissioners appoint Ron Rempel to the Conservation Futures
Citizen Oversight (CF) Committee to serve a 4-year term to represent the interest, "Wildlife Conservation
Biology".
ANALYSIS/STRATEGIC GOALS/PRO'S and CON'S:
Two seat vacancies on the CF Committee, to represent District 3 and an Open Interest, were advertised in
the Peninsula Daily News on September 20, 2020. Mr. Rempel responded to the ad prior to the November
27', 2020 deadline. One other person initially expressed interest in applying for one of the two seats but
did not respond to a follow-up email. On December 16', the CF program coordinator and two committee
members interviewed Mr. Rempel by phone.
Mr. Rempel moved to Marrowstone Island in 2007 after retiring from California's Department of Fish and
Wildlife (CDFW). He pursues several outdoor activities including white water rafting and bicycling, and
has volunteered for the Marrowstone Island Community Association as well as Jefferson Land Trust as a
preserve management volunteer. Mr. Rempel worked in many roles with the CDFW, leading to the
positions of Chief of the Habitat Conservation Branch and Director for Conservation Programs where he
contributed to the agency's strategic vision.
The interview committee recommends Mr. Rempel highly to serve a four-year term on the CF Committee
in the seat formerly occupied by Linda Saunders. He brings an exceptional background in wildlife habitat
conservation and planning and looks forward to expanding his knowledge of open space protection in the
County.
FISCAL IlfACT/COST BENEFIT ANALYSIS:
There is no fiscal impact to the county's General Fund for appointing Mr. Rempel to a first 4-year term on
the CF Committee.
