Dear John,
A lack of housing affordability and urban sprawl go hand-in-hand, and right now, we have an opportunity to address both in the Washington State Legislature.
Currently, arbitrary parking quotas are making it incredibly expensive to build family housing. These parking spots –between $40,000 and $60,000 per slot– are not just expensive but
take up an incredible amount of space where we need it most, in the heart of our urban areas where we need safe, walkable neighborhoods.

These outdated parking mandates lead to increased dependency on personal vehicles and undermine our public transit systems, meaning more sprawl, more traffic, and more pollution – all
while creating vast swaths of concrete for empty vehicles instead of much needed housing, space for active businesses, parks, and more.
Large cities like Austin, Minneapolis, Portland, and twice as many small towns like Port Townsend & Shoreline are leading the way and allowing more flexibility when it comes to parking
needs. Help eliminate parking mandates and make room for more healthy communities. Tell your legislators to support S.B. 5184.
