The BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes are typically associated with breast cancer in women. Yet, men account for 50 percent of the population of people who carry a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation that can significantly increase the risk for several cancer types, including prostate and pancreatic cancer. “Not enough men are getting genetic testing to see if they carry a BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene variant that increases their cancer risk,” says Dr. Cheng.
