Do not open attachments or click on links if you are not expecting them. Hello all, Given the imminent appointment of a new County Sheriff, I write with some urgency. As much as I wear many hats, I speak mainly as a concerned citizen and LGBTQ+ activist with a 60 year history of fighting for people’s basic rights and freedoms. In a series of derogatory and accusatory posts to the Port Townsend Community page on Facebook—posts that take special aim at City Councilor Amy Howard—Jim Scarantino of Port Townsend News links to a video in which an officer states that 100 confirmed members of Antifa have descended upon Port Townsend. The claim may be bogus, and the source uncertain, but an officer for either Jefferson County or the City of Port Townsend believed it enough to cite the number as “confirmed.” Now that a new Sheriff is about to come on the scene, it is essential that he pledge to educate all law enforcement personel about the dangers of believing, let alone stating on camera, what is neither confirmed nor true. To do otherwise is to risk great harm. During this period of concerted attack on trans and non-binary people, liberals, immigrants, people without white skin, intellectuals, educators, and promoters of diversity, equity, and inclusion, it is essential that officers speak the truth and follow the law. It is also essential that they undergo sensitivity training and pledge to uphold the rights and freedoms of all residents of Jefferson County and beyond. For the record, I arrived at City Hall at 3:30 pm on the day of Amy Sousa and Julie Jaman’s demonstration. Chief Olson knows this well, because it was I who conferred with him by phone and directed everyone who wished to speak at City Council to form a line that extended from the doors of City Hall down Water St. to the American Legion. My unique position at the front of the line on the steps of City Hall allowed me to see, as best as possible, what transpired on both sides of Water St. Yes, there were some people, maybe 15 at the most, who were wearing black face masks. Some were riding bicycles back and forth in the street, and some were waving flags. No one I saw carried a sign that said “Antifa” for one simple reason; there is no Antifa. Certainly none that I’ve ever heard of. You may find a website for Antifa, but anyone and their mother can make a website and call it “Antifa," including state agents in Russia, Iran, China, and North Korea. IMHO, many of that confrontations that day were due to the lack of barriers between demonstrators and counter-demonstrators. The situation, with Sousa and crew standing with their backs to the wall facing a mostly hostile crowd, was ripe for escalation. Anyone, including agents provocateurs, could have easily exacebated tensions. Which does not mean that anything violent on the order that some claim actually occurred. That, however, is not the point of this email. I urge you to do your due diligence. My LGBTQ+ community is but one of many communities currently under constant, totally unjustifiable attack. It is essential that all law enforcement personnel follow the letter of local and state law without regard for personal political beliefs and allegiances. Your choice for Sheriff will help determine what transpires on the local level far sooner than any of us may wish. I would appreciate replies to my concerns.
