Do not open attachments or click on links if you are not expecting them. Dear Board of County Commissioners: We are writing to you to bring attention to an issue that affects the youth of Jefferson County, namely the lack of spaces and activities for youth in our county. Port Townsend, specifically, has the potential to be a place for teenagers to feel engaged and included, but right now, there aren’t many options. The Recreation Center could be that space, but it needs attention and improvements to truly serve the youth in our community. Right now, there aren’t many places where teens feel welcome. While Port Townsend is walkable, most public spaces and activities appeal to adults, with high pricing for dining, and a general lack of facilities catering to youth entertainment. During the winter months especially, when the weather is cold, any outdoor activities become less enjoyable. This leaves us bored and frustrated without a comfortable space to spend time with friends, be active, or participate in interests outside of school. The Rec Center could fill the gap that the youth in Port Townsend face, but judging by the current conditions, it’s clear that having a space for young people to enjoy hasn’t been prioritized in a long time. With some updates to its facilities, the rec center could become a place that brings together the community, not just the youth. More planned activities and events would give teenagers something to look forward to. Expanding the Rec Centers hours to be more friendly to students with busy schedules would be a large improvement. Many of us have school, sports, and part-time jobs leaving us with limited time to take advantage of the resources already available. An extension of hours past 6 pm, and keeping the center open on the weekends would be the most effective. Simple upgrades, like repairing equipment, expanding the climbing wall, and fixing the floor of the basketball court– which our own student athletes avoid using because of the condition it's in–could go a long way toward making the space inviting and fun again. For example, the basketball court floor is slippery and unsafe, which deters people from using this essential part of the Rec Center. Fixing this issue could allow for safer practice, pick up games, and tournaments that might be held, not just for students but for the community at large. The Jefferson County Pros Plan has established principles to steer focus and the growth of its parks and recreation system. These principles are to “work in concert with the vision themes to best meet the needs of the community.” If the county is serious about meeting these goals, then investing in spaces like the Rec Center is essential. Providing the youth of Port Townsend with a welcoming, well maintained and accessible space is a step in the right direction of us being able to enjoy and participate in our community as much as the other residents do. Thank you for taking time to consider this matter. Sincerely, Sky Eggersgluss and Samuel Wilson
