WSF Monday Matters
Don’t drive impaired on Washington State Ferries
Last week WSF employees were provided updated policy on how to address impaired passengers when found operating a vehicle at or on the vessels and terminals.
WSF serves as marine highways for businesses, tourist and daily commuters and we are committed to ensuring the safety of all passengers, employees, and the public for the millions that
use them.
One way we do this is by preventing impaired drivers from endangering themselves and others while on any of our vessels or at any of our terminals.
Anyone operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or other substances that impair their ability to drive is illegal which includes driving on or off the ferries.
You can also be arrested for physical control of a vehicle while impaired even if you’re waiting in your vehicle to get off the ferry.
Staff are trained and continue to be trained to identify signs of impairment, how to take appropriate steps to identify suspected drivers, and ensure law enforcement are involved when
necessary.
Action will be taken by our employees if there is observable evidence or behavior that leads them to believe an individual may be impaired. This includes action by the captains who
have the authority to delay service until the situation is resolved which includes waiting for law enforcement to address the impaired driver.
While our terminal staff and vessel crews do not have law enforcement powers, these updated policies and procedures give clear guidance for employees to identify, manage and report customers
suspected of driving vehicles while impaired.
So, remember, actions that pose a risk to others, including ferry commuters, our employees and the public have consequences. Think before you decide to become impaired in a vehicle and
be on our highways, including the ferries.

Customer Service
For the week of Feb. 24 – Mar. 2 - Our customer service team sent 105 rider alerts, received 1,226 customer calls, and fielded more than 115 written comments and emails related to reservations,
schedules, and fares.
Service Reliability
For the week of Feb. 24 – Mar. 2 - We completed 99.16% of our 2,728 scheduled sailings. Of the 23 cancellations, 48% (11) were due to schedule resets (when a boat is so far behind schedule,
we cancel a sailing to get it back on schedule, providing predictability for customers), 35% (8) were due to tidal currents, and 17% (4) were due to crewing.
Vessel Availability
We’re operating at our 15-vessel current service level, adding a 16th “bonus” boat seven days a week on the Fauntleroy/Southworth/Vashon “Triangle” route when crewing and vessel availability
allows.
Hybrid Conversions/New Vessels/Terminal Electrification
Hybrid Conversions – The Wenatchee is dry docked for required underwater hull inspections and cleaning. Upgrades to the Wenatchee propulsion system and installation of electric power
equipment is expected to be completed and return to service in summer 2025. Significant work has been completed to date to include removal of two propulsion diesel generators, installation
of electric power conversion and distribution equipment, upgrades to obsolete propulsion control equipment, reconfiguration of piping systems, and build-out of two new battery rooms.
New Vessels – The contracting process for new hybrid-electric 160-auto ferries continues. We received three pre-qualification packages from shipyards across the country and recently
released design drawings and other information required to prepare bids. Bid opening is scheduled for April 7.
Terminal Electrification – WSF is in the process of planning and designing charging infrastructure at 16 of our ferry terminals. This effort begins with ensuring that each terminal will
be able to secure sufficient energy through collaboration with local utilities. Community engagement and predesign work is underway for the first four terminals that will be equipped
with vessel charging.
