MIRECC Presents
March 19, 2025: Sleep disorders in TBI and PTSD: Clinical management and future directions
Kent Werner, MD, PhD
3:00PM AST-EDT/ 2:00PM CDT/ 1:00PM MDT/ 12:00PM PDT/ 11:00AM AKT/
9:00AM HST / 8:00AM SST
PURPOSE STATEMENT
Sleep disorders are common among patients with co-occurring traumatic brain injury (TBI) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), though more information is needed to understand their
physiology and impact. This lecture aims to enhance our understanding of the interactive relationship between sleep disorders, TBI, and PTSD. Through a review of the underlying physiology
of sleep and its disruption in TBI, clinicians will gain insights into the impact of brain injuries on sleep patterns and their subsequent effects on mental health and function. The
session will also address emerging biomarkers and therapeutic approaches. Attendees will gain knowledge to better evaluate and manage sleep-related challenges in individuals with TBI
and PTSD, while exploring future directions for treatment and research in this area.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1. Understand the physiology of sleep and traumatic brain injury in the military
2. Discuss impact of TBI on sleep physiology
3. Evaluate potential for new biomarkers and therapeutic approaches
