HomeMy WebLinkAbout032425 email - Re_ On the petition my public post (0002)ALERT: BE CAUTIOUS This email originated outside the organization. Do not open attachments or click on links if you are not expecting them. John. Thank you for the acknowledgment. I didn't see a clear legal argument from you on why this plan doesn’t work. The city can define zoning, emergencies, and regulations to a high degree. Emergency housing regulations do allow for special exceptions. David, No? Did you read the Land Boat plan? Did you read the Road to ADU plan? I’d have a lot less to write about if you would take a moment to look at what I’m talking about and let me know if anything needs fixing. These are strategic home runs for Port Townsend’s workers and homeless based on rational thought, legal precedent, and value alignment. With a half million already going to high-end condos, where is the effort for the people sleeping in the cold as we speak? Are you networking and collaborating with the state? Don’t you have a responsibility to get those impositions off Port Townsend's back? It isn’t about skirting, it's about being bold enough to plant a flag with a solid legal case and start a project with collaborative intent. There is a historic precedent of people living in dry dock boats here. You are already skirting regulations by not cracking down on the Port. So take a stand for your constituents or take a stand for regulation. I’d rather support the Port and the people here. So make an experimental overlay district over the Port to create a buffer of legitimacy. That is a stroke of a pen. See if higher powers come to sue. Then counter-sue or show your belly and drop the overlay. You will get sued for something anyway, you might as well gameplan what it is. If the state sues, you can sue them for blocking their own call for innovative housing. The federal government is being dismantled right now, and if they sue, get the state to sue them to uphold their own rule for innovative housing. The circumstances are ideal for breaking new ground, and we can establish a way to get emergency housing up to the equivalent code after a grace period. And if we have support? This plan can draw funding from environmental agencies, housing authorities, and maybe there is even an angle on historic preservation grants. The plan hardly needs funding because of the donation and remediation rebate cost model. As for hiring. I’m clearly the top candidate and have demonstrated the capability of an executive-level thinker while concurrently fighting my way out of near crippling lived experience. I'm struggling to get through all of the content given my work-related responsibilities, but wanted to make sure you were aware that we are not able to legally skirt state or federal laws related to hiring practices, permitting, emergency declarations, or other matters. It doesn't mean that we necessarily agree with each of the various requirements, but it's something of an extra burden that local government carries in both playing within these legal constraints and structures (many of which are imposed on us) and staying creative and innovating in solving problems. You can bring me on and pay me. And we write a contract that you can keep the hiring process going. After emergency priorities. But you have to put in my contract you can’t fire me until you can fill the role. $150,000 a year and I’ll cover both grant writing and senior planner with a single comprehensive approach. Unless you can cite some legitimate reason that you can afford to break the emergency housing mandate. Clearly you need to tell the State to give you a waver for emergency measures. We have leverage on them from their own housing mandate. And your team can buffer my rough ends with all that polished professionalism. The deal is what I make has to be at least an avenue for progression, I work how I like, and I can come get the social benefits of the work place. Put me on salary. I’ll just do this on my own anyways. And I’m on food stamps, and just need work. Contact the Governor’s office and ask him to sign off. He needs to see the value proposition. After reflecting deeply, I want to address a valid question: whether there’s a conflict of interest in me both supporting the petition for a strong mayor system and being a potential candidate. While I am passionate about improving Port Townsend and have offered this petition as a tool for community change, I believe it’s important to step back and allow the community to decide independently. I’ve laid the groundwork and demonstrated how it can be done. Now, I leave the petition in the hands of the people. Whether this is the direction you want is entirely up to you. It’s not about me—it’s about giving Port Townsend the choice and voice to shape its future. His commitment and leadership were essential to Port Townsend, and this is clearly a moment of both loss and uncertainty for the city team and community alike. In moments like this, I believe it’s important for all of us who care about this city to step forward—not out of self-interest, but because continuity, trust, and stability matter more than ever. That’s why I am reaching out to offer myself as a resource during this transition. I’ve spent the time deeply engaged in the civic dialogue of Port Townsend, and while I’ve often been seen as a challenger of the status quo, I hope it’s clear that my commitment to the well-being of this city is meaningful. I recognize past friction, but I believe that real leadership sometimes means knowing when to set differences aside to ensure the city’s foundation stays strong. If there is a way I can step in—whether to assist, coordinate, or stabilize—I am ready to have that conversation. Let’s demonstrate to the public that Port Townsend values action, unity, and resilience when it matters most. Please consider this my sincere offer to collaborate and help keep the city moving forward in this difficult moment.
