Frank Chopp, who passed away on Saturday, was the longest serving House Speaker in Washington history. Ralph Munro, a five-term Secretary of State, left us last week. A Democrat and a Republican, respectively, both were critical leaders in the Coalition, especially in our early years. Frank served on the Coalition's board in the late 90s and was instrumental in the development of new grant categories, particularly related to riparian areas and farmland protection. He stood up for the Coalition during the difficult times: a steadfast supporter of our mission and a true Coalition builder who helped us re-envision our organizational priorities and needs in 1998, upon completion of our first decade of work. Ralph was a great supporter and extended his passion for our work to include his family, as he and his former wife Karen Munro hosted memorable WWRC gatherings. He was a community leader, a champion for our orcas, a leader in rights for people with disabilities, and a tireless advocate for our non-partisan Coalition to help protect and preserve the great state of WA. We’ve been on pins and needles awaiting the details and how the anticipated cuts would affect our support agenda. We have some insight now, and we have both challenges to address and work to do! Most notably, we are seeing reduced amounts proposed on most support agenda operating items when compared to Governor Inslee’s budget back in December. Rain or shine, our focus for the afternoon will be on stewardship of a retention pond east of the tennis courts. They need all available hands to help them clear weeds and invasive plants and to lay down fresh wood chips. Volunteer equipment, TPL swag, and refreshments will be provided. Please dress for the weather and wear closed-toe shoes. Renovated in 2022 by TPL and City of Lynnwood, South Lynnwood Park serves the most diverse and lowest-income community in Lynnwood. Developed with support from Kaiser Permanente, the site features pickleball courts, picnic tables, public restrooms, a mural designed with the local school, and a really cool playground. The City of Lynnwood received a grant from the USDA Forest Service to protect urban forests, riparian areas, and wetlands in South Lynnwood and now they us to get their hands in the dirt and do some good! Beginning March 24, 2025, visitors will be able to secure a campsite instead of traveling to a park and gambling on the availability of a first come, first served site. Campers can book a same-day reservation until 2 p.m. on their intended day of arrival. This change is specific to campground reservations and does not apply to roofed accommodations, vacation rentals, yurts and day-use facilities (like picnic shelters).
