Editor’s Note – With the inundation of news coming in to everyone’s email boxes, we appreciate you taking time to catch up on JCIRA’s efforts for our local immigrants. JCIRA has hired a new Center Coordinator, Maria del Mar Rodriguez – look for a profile on her next month. Action is needed to advocate for immigrants in this year’s legislative session both in Washington State as well as the federal level. Also in this edition, we join our sister organization Indivisible to share news of an upcoming rally on April 6. To read the English edition, click here. Legislative Update: Support Washington's Immigrant Communities Today! <https://mcusercontent.com/e6a5ce9c533fce19d6336ca83/images/1253800f-23ed-8417-7b5e-c083508d53da.png> The focus of the Washington State legislature has shifted to budget provisos so that funding can still be made available for needed immigrant programs and support in lieu of legislative bills that failed to advance this session. Hearings are happening this week. JCIRA recommends you cut and paste the following script, or create your own email addressing the itemized budget requests and send off emails today! The list of District 24 legislative leaders and representatives are provided below. Subject: Support Washington’s Immigrant Communities in the face of Mass Deportation Dear <Legislator>: I urge the legislature to continue to lead the nation in providing support for all its residents, regardless of immigration status. I am asking for meaningful investment in policies supportive of immigrant and refugee communities in the Washington State 2025-27 biennial budget. To this end I am asking the legislature to adopt the House’s budget proposal at minimum, and that our Senate allies and champions rise to meet their colleagues in addressing this political moment by funding the following programs in the biennial budget: * $152.4M to adequately fund Apple Health Expansion to cover at least the 12,000 people who were finally able to obtain healthcare coverage just last year; * $25M to continue the Washington Migrant and Asylum-Seeker Support program so that immigrant community members who are newly arrived receive much-needed housing assistance, employment support, intakes and brief legal services, cultural orientation, and other essential services needed to become thriving members of our communities; * $18M for the Legal Aid for Low-Income Immigrants, which provides immigration legal services and deportation defense, with a focus on full direct representation to Washington residents with no or low income facing deportation or at high risk of being deported; and * $4M for the Washington New Americans Program, which provides free and low-cost naturalization services across Washington State. Information on Emergency Childcare The Northwest Justice Project has critical information for parents on making a plan for someone else to care for your child if you cannot. You can say what you want to happen if you're not available to care for your child under age 18, or their property. Without going to court, you can give Power of Attorney (POA) for Parental Powers to the person who will care for your child. Thank you! Tell your Representatives: Protect Sanctuary Cities, Vote No on HR 32 Congress is about to vote on the No Bailout for Sanctuary Cities Act (H.R. 32), a really dangerous bill that would cut federal funds to any city that welcomes immigrants. Trump, Musk, and MAGA Republicans want any excuse to punish their political opponents, and they don’t care who gets hurt. If this bill passes, as many as 700 local governments in 28 states (including D.C.) could be impacted by funding cuts. Email Representative Randall now and tell her to vote NO on HR 32. Tell your Rep Randall: Protect Sanctuary Cities, Vote No on HR 32 by going to this link <https://jcira.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e6a5ce9c533fce19d6336ca83&id=a5a4fade8f&e=536eb1b1db> . Here is a sample letter you can send in your email. Dear Representative Randall: As your constituent, I urge you to vote NO on the No Bailout for Sanctuary Cities Act (H.R. 32). This bill would deprive communities—including ours—of desperately needed resources simply because of their policies around immigration. Specifically, this bill would deprive communities of a disturbingly wide array of federal funding, if that location has implemented sanctuary policies that support immigrant community safety. At a time in which so many people in our community are struggling to make ends meet, we shouldn’t be making it harder by cutting funding for school lunch programs, domestic violence shelters, transportation infrastructure, and disaster relief. Those programs deserve greater investment, not less, and certainly should not see funding cut because a city or state decides to welcome immigrants. Again, I urge you to vote NO on the No Bailout for Sanctuary Cities Act (H.R. 32) < full name> < email> , < location> Thank you again for paying atttention to this critical issue! <https://mcusercontent.com/e6a5ce9c533fce19d6336ca83/images/c317a491-3cd8-f937-d976-bff88f4f2736.jpg> In Other News Here are some of the news articles being shared by JCIRA board and members. Ironically, the IRS has begun collaborating with the administration to confirm immigrants addresses they've reported through their tax filings, which will likely have the effect of reducing tax payments. She bonded with other women who were separated from their families. Here is a tragic story <https://jcira.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e6a5ce9c533fce19d6336ca83&id=2d7c18c59b&e=536eb1b1db> about a young girl who died by suicide after being bullied about her immigration status.
