As our Jefferson County Museum of Art + History completes their work to make it more accessible and welcoming, all of us have been curiously anticipating its grand reopening on April 5. With electricians arriving on-site, painters moving into public areas, and key structural modifications underway, much has been happening behind the scenes! The Museum’s Executive Director Tara McCauley, and Board President Ann Welch give us a special preview of the renovations, along with some inside info on upcoming shows. Tonight, we’ll be celebrating the birthday of long time Ellington baritone sax man Harry Carney. April 8 We’ll be hearing from jazz legends like Clifford Brown, Teri Lyne Carrington and Stanley Turrentine as well as lesser-known players like Oscar Hernandez, Kelley Johnson and the group Thumbscrew. On “What’s New?” this week we’ll be listening to the new release Beneath the Skin from vocalist Nnenna Freelon. David had assignments that took him around the globe — China, India, Western Europe, Japan and many other destinations. When living in New Mexico his wife taught at a predominantly Navajo high school. This was yet another cultural learning curve. In fact, that’s what David loves the most — learning about different cultures. Now that he’s in PT he’s part of the team that has been restoring the Point Wilson Lighthouse. His curiosity is endless, and he loves a challenge, whether restoring lighthouses or building specialized cameras. SPANISH CASTLE MAGIC with host Jon Kertzer Wednesday 10pm-Midnight Musicology expert Jon Kertzer will share from his extensive archives of music and interviews from his many years in Seattle. April 2 Alice Stuart grew up in the Lake Chelan area and came to Seattle in the early 1960s to participate in the nascent folk music scene, playing in folk clubs and on the KING-TV Hootenanny program. She moved to California in 1964 and was discovered by Chris Strachwitz of Arhoolie Records at her performance at the '64 Berkeley Folk Festival, and he recorded and released her debut album of folk and blues later that year. Stuart later moved from acoustic to electric guitar and recorded two albums for Fantasy Records with her band, Snake. She returned in Seattle and Northwest in 1999 where she has continued her musical career with more recordings and many notable performances. April 9 Cellist with the Seattle Symphony since 1979, Walter Gray is a mainstay in the classical music world of Seattle. He starting playing cello in his early teens growing up in Seattle, playing with the Seattle Youth Symphony and studying with Raymond Davis. After attending the renowned Curtis Conservatory, Gray returned to Seattle to co-found the innovative string group, Kronos Quartet, and played with them for their first five years in the ’70s. Gray joined the Seattle Symphony in 1979, and has played with them over the past 40 years. He is also part of the Music of Remembrance project, and has taught cello to upcoming students over the past four decades. Episode 64 – April 1/4. Four hours later, we arrived in the town of Jinguan. After Wuwei and Zhangye, Jinguan was the third of four major garrisons established more than 2000 years ago by the Chinese along the Silk Road. We visited the spring where General Huo Qubing shared a jug of rare wine with his troops. Episode 65 – April 8/11. We’re in the towns of Jinguan or “Wine Spring,” We’ve just concluded our visit to the spring. On our way back into town, we stopped at a museum that had the usual collection of stones and bones and busted pots, but it did feature one unusual exhibit. Episode 66 – April 15. We’ve been visiting the sights of Jinguan, one of the four garrisons the Chinese had built along the Gansu Corridor 2000 years ago. Despite its long history, the town’s only above -ground relic from the past was its drum tower, which sits in the center of town. We caught a bus that took us to the next town down the line, which was Jiayuguan, 22 kilometers to the west.
