Urgent action needed! The U.S. Secretary of Transportation might cancel the Puget Sound to Pacific RAISE grant and other bike infrastructure projects nationwide. The $16.13m RAISE grant written by the Puget Sound to Pacific Collaborative (including Bainbridge Island Parks & Trails Foundation, the North Kitsap Trails Association, and the Peninsula Trails Coalition) was awarded in 2023. Every March, the Broom Busters get busy and tackle the Scotch Broom along the Olympic Discovery Trail. To keep the trail looking top notch, it takes many volunteers. Lots of volunteers are scheduled through us - Peninsula Trails Coalition. Sometimes, people get together and do trail work on their own. This crew of volunteers schedules and organizes themselves. They do it rain or shine. If you've tried pull out Scotch Broom, you know it's a tough job. If you happen across this crew, be sure and tell them thank you. How did they do this year? They hit 107 volunteer hours and took out 12,150 Scotch Broom plants along the ODT. Their locations included Diamond Point Road, Old Blyn Road, Deer Park rest area, and Dry Creek. They worked with the Dungeness River Nature Center and the Clallam County Noxious Weed Program, Thank you, Broom Busters! We appreciate you. National Geographic and Top Trails! If you're wondering where to start your cross country cycling trip this summer, check out National Geographic's suggestion. They suggest starting on the Great American Rail-Trial (GART) at the Washington coast. This is of course the Olympic Discovery Trail! Our ODT is the western most part of the GART and we think the most beautiful! The largest acquisition is 3,500 acres – now the Port Gamble Forest Heritage Park, with more than 6 miles of the STO and 60 miles of trail network. Port Gamble is immediately east of the Hood Canal Bridge. NKTA is a Peninsula Trails Coalition partner advocating for and supporting the Puget Sound to Pacific initiative, which facilitated the $16M federal RAISE planning grant with projects in Kitsap, Jefferson, and Clallam Counties. This will complete the STO and ODT sections of the Rails to Trails Conservancy’s Great American Rail Trail from Washington, D.C. to the Pacific Ocean at La Push. This is an opportunity to get better acquainted with our neighbors as we coordinate efforts to build the trail connecting the STO with the Olympic Discovery Trail between Hood Canal and Discovery Bay. Connecting our Trail Towns (Port Ludlow, Quilcene, Chimacum, Port Hadlock) to the Olympic Discovery Trail from the Hood Canal Bridge to Discovery Bay is a priority. This is a public meeting and all are invited.
