Purpose Statement: The problem of military environmental exposures and their impact on the mental health of veterans has become an urgent concern, as increasing evidence suggests a significant
link between toxic exposures during service and the development of psychiatric conditions. In this lecture, the discussants will provide the latest empirical data about the relationship
between military environmental exposures and mental health outcomes in veterans. The session will provide healthcare professionals with an overview of these associations and discuss
strategies to better assess and manage these complex health issues.
Learning Objectives:
1. Provide an overview of a recently completed evidence map that examined the association between military toxic exposures and psychiatric outcomes among Veterans.
2. Describe results of two additional empirical research projects that examined exposures and mental health among Veterans.
3. Discuss clinical implications working with Veterans with military environmental exposure concerns, particularly in the context of the PACT Act.
The target audience includes, but is not limited to, Physicians, Nurses, Psychologists, Social Workers and other professionals supporting Veteran care and active-duty combat personnel
who will become Veterans.

About Shannon Nugent, PhD

Shannon Nugent, Ph.D. is a psychologist and core investigator at the VA Portland Healthcare System, Center to Improve Veteran Involvement in Care (CIVIC) and an Associate Professor at
Oregon Health and Science University in the Department of Psychiatry. She completed her PhD in Clinical Health Psychology from the University of Colorado Denver in 2015 and completed
a two-year health services research fellowship with CIVIC in 2018. Dr. Nugent’s research interests are focused on understanding and improving mental health outcomes among individuals
with chronic medical conditions, including Gulf War Illness, Long COVID, and cancer. She recently completed a five-year Mentored Research Scholar Grant from the American Cancer Society.
In addition, she is leading projects funded by the National Cancer Institute and VA HSR related to cannabis use among cancer survivors and improving care for Long COVID.
About Kyle Bourassa, PhD

Kyle Bourassa is a Staff Psychologist in the Research Service of the Durham VA Medical System and an Affiliate Investigator at Georgetown University in the Department of Psychology.
At the Durham VA, he is an Affiliate Investigator with the VISN 6 Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center (MIRECC) and Geriatrics Research, Education and Clinical Center
(GRECC). He is currently funded by a Career Development Award (CDA-2) awarded by the Clinical Science Research & Development (CSR&D) service of the VA Office of Research and Development
(ORD). Kyle received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Arizona and completed his doctoral internship at the VA Puget Sound Healthcare System in Seattle. Kyle’s
research focuses on understanding how stress, adversity, and trauma might affect veteran health across the lifespan. His work examines the psychosocial and physiological dysregulation
that links the experience of stressors with the onset and progression of chronic diseases, disability, and premature mortality. His recent work has highlighted the role that inflammation
and accelerated biological aging might play in linking stress and trauma to poor health as people age. In addition to his work examining mechanisms of action, Kyle also studies how
behavioral interventions might improve health among people who experience stress and trauma.
