This is true in part because the closer a trail comes to completion, the more trail there is to build and maintain. Let me explain. Trails are about connecting people and places. As the Olympic Discovery Trail (ODT) continues to expand, new possibilities emerge for connecting more communities and more people. Sure, the Olympic Discovery Trail could have only gone from Port Townsend to Port Angeles. But what if it went all the way to Forks? That would make a good trail even better, right? By that same logic, the ODT could also run from the Hood Canal Bridge all the way to La Push. This would connect communities in East Jefferson County like Port Hadlock, Chimacum, and Port Ludlow by way of a nonmotorized pathway to places like Port Townsend, Sequim, and Lake Crescent — and beyond! Of course, once we get across the Hood Canal Bridge, the ODT could connect to the Sound to Olympics Trail and across the North Kitsap Peninsula and Bainbridge Island, connecting trail users to Kingston, Winslow, and even Bremerton. This is how the ODT has become a part of a national vision—the cross-country Great American Rail Trail, connecting Washington, DC, to La Push, WA. As our ODT trail network continues to grow, others want to connect, which makes the system better and more valuable for everyone. It’s how, in part, the ODT has become a significant part of the North Olympic Peninsula’s economic engine. This is also how the ODT has become an intergenerational endeavor. The fruit of our labor today will be enjoyed for generations to come: our children and our children’s children will experience a version of the ODT that we can only imagine today.
